Student Government visited Community Action Services today to learn the ins and outs of what happens there. After a tour and learning how donations are received and distributed, students had an opportunity to sort through several bins, separating out the vegetables, meats, beans, fruits, etc. It was a great opportunity to see the impact that the food bank has on the community & how it helps families in need get back on their feet… the most important things to remember as we get ready to kick off our annual food drive!!
Meet the Teacher Monday
Our Foreign Language department has undergone some big changes this year! Another new teacher is Jamila Hubbard, who teaches ASL.
Jamila was born Deaf, so American Sign Language is her first language… but she has since learned written French, Mexican Sign Language and Venezuelan Sign Language. Jamila grew up in the small town of Montezuma, Georgia. She graduated from Gallaudet University with her Bachelor’s degree in ASL Linguistics. She enjoys interpreting and translating songs into ASL in order to help Deaf people visualize what’s happening, so that’s like a movie running in their mind.
Even though she just began her position here last week, her colleagues and students have already noted her warmth and positivity. It is readily evident in her smile and demeanor!
Welcome to Provo High, Jamila!
Meet the Teacher Monday
Andrew Klay is a new French teacher at Provo High. He came to us mid-year, and we are très content to have him here!
Andrew was born and raised in San Diego, California, so naturally he loves the beach… but he adores winter and snow as well! He learned French in Québec, Canada, and has been speaking and applying it extensively for 13 years.
His professional French experience includes tutoring, translation, voiceover narration, and weekly conference interpretation. He comes to us most recently from Edgemont Elementary School, where he worked for a year and a half in their French Dual Immersion program.
Andrew enjoys playing the piano and composing, collecting French Disney and other popular songs, skiing, biking, and stand-up comedy. He also speaks Spanish and is enjoying connecting with his students as they all grow together in their love of languages.
Canvas Helps Parents Access Classroom Information
Provo City School District has adopted a learning management system (LMS) for secondary schools called Canvas. Canvas allows parents to quickly engage in their child’s education. Parents can review upcoming or past assignments, check on grades, and get course announcements.
After parents create an account, they can become an “observer” of their student.
Observers have limited permissions that allow them to see what is going on in a course and a calendar of assignments. Like students, Observers cannot view a course until it is published and the course has started.
The following features are available to parents:
- Set your Notifications
- View the Dashboard
- View Assignments
- View Canvas Grades
- View the Calendar
- Communicate with the teacher
Parents can configure their Canvas account to send text and email notifications to be notified of grades and announcements.
A Canvas Parent app is available for smartphones and tablets in the Google Play Store or The Apple App Store.
Follow These Steps to Login
Before starting, parents need a pairing code from their student. Instructions on how to generate this code are on the Canvas Guides website.
- Go to Provo City School District’s Canvas login page
- In the upper right corner, you’ll see “Parent of a Canvas User?” Click that link.
- Complete the fields with your name, email and password along with the Student Pairing Code.
- Check the box to agree to the terms of use and acknowledge the privacy policy, then click “Start Participating” button.
Parents can access full instructions on how to use Canvas as an observer by going to the Canvas Observer Guide.
Meet the Teacher Monday
Cesar Cardoso is a veteran teacher; he’s been in the ‘biz for 29 years! He is an outstanding PE teacher and boys’ soccer coach who truly cares for the students he works with. Cesar was born in Brazil. Between that and his coaching, it may be easy to guess that two of his favorite things are playing soccer and eating Brazilian Churrasco. When he’s not teaching, Cesar loves traveling. When he can get in some TV time, he enjoys watching Hawaii 5-0 and the movie Charley. And even though his favorite color is sky blue… we all know that Cesar bleeds green. He is a true Bulldog and a true asset to Provo High!
