Employees of the Month
We would like to recognize and congratulate our PHS Employees of the Month for May 2018!
Mike Halverson: (Photography Teacher)
Mike grew up right here in Provo, three blocks away from Provo High. He had been teaching at Churchill Jr. High in Granite District for 13 years when he got a call from his old PHS art teacher who was retiring, asking Mike to take his place. Mike has been here ever since; 18 years to be exact. He loves the people and the students he associates with. Working with these kids keeps him thinking young. When Mike isn’t at work, he paints in oils, acrylics, and watercolors. He and his wife run Wildflower Studios, a ceramics business in Spanish Fork. He also loves to hike, swim, ski, and do most outdoor activities – especially going on photo/fishing expeditions to Alaska.
Here are a few things colleagues had to say about Mike:
Mike Halverson is a Bulldog at heart. He has a calm, collected demeanor that instills confidence in his students. His smile is infectious.
Mike is always willing to help with anything or everything we have needed help with around the school. He does a great job capturing the fun of the different activities here. We appreciate all the hard work he put in creating the photos for the new school.
In class he he can be seen capturing Hi rez candid moments with his students. No matter his focus, he always projects a positive demeanor!
I admire his ability to push his students to their artistic limits. I love walking down lower C Wing and seeing the exemplary work of his students on display.
Sam Ramos: (Math Teacher)
Sam grew up in Provo, and except for 2 years in Orem, he spent the majority of his life here. Sam is a Provo High graduate who volunteered tutoring his fellow students during his 4 years attending here. After graduating, he volunteered in the after-school tutoring program & co-taught with Mrs. McConnell in the Latinos in Action classes. Sam continued working with the Gear Up program in Provo District while he was finishing his degree in math education. He student taught at Mountain View, which helped confirm that Provo High was where he wanted to start his teaching career. Sam enjoys the culture of Provo High School and the community and the feeling that we treat each other like family, and that if anyone needs something, everyone is ready to lend a helping hand. When Sam isn’t at work, he likes to stay busy. He enjoys drawing, listening to music, gardening, dancing (Zumba, breakdancing, etc.), lifting weights, hanging out with his family, playing with his daughter, cooking, baking, playing video games, watching movies, reading, helping his dad landscaping, and learning about new things he didn’t know about or didn’t know how to do.
Here are a few things colleagues had to say about Sam:
Sam is one of the brightest souls I have ever met. He is always smiling and looking at the bright side of life! Such a joy to be around! Sam is a gem to have in the math department! :)
Sam is awesome and very smart. He relates to his students and knows how to get their attention. He has a way of explaining math so they understand.
Sam is always looking to find a connection to everything in math that he can, so that his students understand a little better why they are learning the material.
Sam has a positive attitude and is very enthusiastic to teach. He’s very willing to collaborate and he has a good sense of humor, which makes him great to work with.
Thank you Mike and Sam for your contribution to PHS! We are lucky to have you here!!
PHS Students Attend Hamilton
On Friday, May 4th, Provo High students had the unique opportunity to attend the Broadway Musical Hamilton. Before the performance, students from all over the state performed student pieces- poems, raps, songs, and one-scene original acts. Students also posed various questions to the cast during a Q&A session:
To the question “What would you say to your younger self?” the collective response seemed to be trust. Trust in the process. Trust in your yourself. Trust that you are exactly where you need to be in this moment. Trust that whatever you are going through, it’s for a reason. Lieutenant Governor Spencer Cox also addressed the students with the hope that every student find their voice, and, like Hamilton, to be fearless with that voice.
“What is a legacy? It’s planting seeds in a garden you never get to see.” –Hamilton, The World Was Wide Enough.
With this year’s PHS theme of Leave Your Legacy, that line certainly resonated. And while the line that resonated most differed from one person to the next, PHS students and staff shared one commonality: An abundance of gratitude to have been a part of #EduHam.
For more info about the experience, see this KSL article.
