Savannah Heideman Named as Delegate to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders
Sophomore Savannah Heideman will be a Delegate to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Lowell, MA on June 23-25, 2019.
The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who want to become physicians or go into medical research fields. The purpose of this event is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in the country who aspire to be physicians or medical scientists, to stay true to their dream and, after the event, to provide a path, plan and resources to help them reach their goal.
Savannah’s nomination letter was signed by Dr. Mario Capecchi, winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine and the Science Director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists to represent Provo High School based on her academic achievement, leadership potential and determination to serve humanity in the field of medicine.
During the three-day Congress, Savannah will join students from across the country and hear Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science Winners talk about leading medical research; be given advice from Ivy League and top medical school deans on what to expect in medical school; witness stories told by patients who are living medical miracles; be inspired by fellow teen medical science prodigies; and learn about cutting-edge advances and the future in medicine and medical technology.

January Employees of the Month
We would like to recognize and congratulate our Employees of the Month for January 2019!!
Cesar Cardoso: (Physical Education Teacher)
Cesar Cardoso grew up in Brazil. He came to Provo when he married his wife and was invited to play soccer on scholarship at BYU. Cesar has been teaching at Provo High School for 29 years and coaching here for 30 years. Before coming to PHS he played soccer in Brazil and Louisiana. Cesar loves to teach and coach the students at PHS. He has genuine concern for the total welfare of each student and athlete and likes teaching them the principles of self-discipline, sacrifice, and hard work. When Cesar isn’t at work he likes to travel and visit new places and spend time with his 8 kids and 3 grandkids that are his life.
Here are some things colleagues had to say about Cesar:
Great Athlete, Great Coach, Great Teacher and wonderful friend!
Cesar not only is a great teacher/coach but a great friend. He cares about all his students and wants them to be successful. Monday collaboration meetings are so much more entertaining with his funny humor.
Coach Cardoso is a great colleague, teacher and coach. He has dedicated his career to helping our students understand the need to stay physically fit. He is a friend to all of the faculty, administration and the community. As a coach he has had great success and has changed the lives of many of our students.
I am so impressed with his unconditional genuine concern for all of his students. He takes an active individual interest in every single kid. He is a great example of why we get into teaching to begin with.
Roy Edwards: (School Resource Officer/Law Enforcement Teacher)
Roy Edwards grew up on a farm in Vineyard, UT. He came to Provo when he left the Mapleton Police Department to join the Provo Police Department. After working 10 years of patrol and 5 years as an undercover narcotics officer he decided to give being a school resource officer a try. This is Roy’s 7th year at Provo High School. As a teacher and a Police Officer he has the ability to interact with the students and the opportunity be a positive role model and make a difference in their lives. He hopes he has an influence on them to make the right decisions and instill in them the importance of getting a good education so they can get the career they want. When Roy isn’t at work he enjoys spending time camping or riding the side by side in the mountains with his family and trips to Hawaii.
Here are some things colleagues had to say about Roy:
Roy is positive, knowledgeable, and friendly to both staff and students. He is super dependable too. Ask him for something and you can be sure he’ll come through. He also is just a all around nice guy.
When it comes to his class & the students he teaches, Roy cares about them all, and has such a positive impact that students are always coming back post-graduation to update him about their lives. When it comes to the school & the safety of everyone here, Roy takes his job very seriously.
He is quick to respond when there is a problem and has your back. He’s a great listener and has a fun sense of humor. I appreciate all his help and willingness to work with all of the PHS students.
Roy cares about Provo High students and reaches out to students who are struggling. He has the ability to gain their respect and trust. Also he is an incredible willing listener. So grateful for his service, kindness and smile!
Thank you Cesar and Roy for your contribution to PHS! We are lucky to have you here!!

December Employees of the Month
Christy Gomm: (Attendance Secretary)
Christy Gomm grew up in Orem, Utah where she attended Mountain View High School. After she and her husband were married they moved to Missouri for a year and a half. Upon returning to Utah, they found a house in Provo and have lived in this area ever since. She has 3 kids who have graduated from PHS and one more will this spring. Christy has worked at Lakeview Elementary for the past 8 years – this is her first year at Provo High School. Christy enjoys the entertaining students and working with the staff here at PHS. When Christy isn’t at work, she enjoys photography and digital design.
Here are some things colleagues had to say about Christy:
She always quick to help me with attendance issues when I am changing classes. :) She is pleasant and friendly and great to work with.
I absolutely love how she is always trying to get to know the kids better and how she is always looking for solutions to our biggest problem: Attendance. She is awesome!!!
Christy is always pleasant and has a smile on her face. I know she works hard to try and address all the issues surrounding attendance & how to best help serve our students. Also- her office always has the cutest decorations, no matter the holiday!
Christy is one of the hardest workers I have met. She truly cares about the students and wants find ways to help them be successful. She is organized, a problem solver, and a joy to work with.
Alan Gatenby: (Auto Teacher)
Alan Gatenby was grew up right here in Provo, Utah. He graduated from Provo High School in 1984, then married his high school sweetheart. Alan has been working at Provo High School as the auto teacher for five years now. Before coming to PHS he worked for 13 years at Murray High School and Salt Lake Community College. He has spent 25 years working with his family at Gatenby Service in Provo, specializing in electrical and drivability. Alan loves working with the people here at Provo High and watching the students mature. It’s fun for him to see them build a foundation for diagnosing electrical issues on modern automobiles. When Alan isn’t at work he enjoys riding his motorcycle and spoiling his granddaughter.
Here are some things colleagues had to say about Alan:
He is one of the most selfless teachers at Provo High. He puts in endless extra hours after school and on weekends organizing the auto shop and helping students with their car problems. He seldom takes time out for lunch because he’s helping a student get his car out the door before the end of the day.
He is amazing at diagnosing all kinds of car and engine troubles. I remember a transmission sensor that wouldn’t work. He traced the problem back to a bad solder joint in the dash board circuitry.
His students have won and placed well in countless auto repair competitions.
Alan is more interested in his students learning valuable hands-on automotive lessons, than he is in keeping up with the seeming endless list of emails that hit our in-boxes each day. I salute Alan for keeping the most important things higher on his priority list.
Thank you Christy and Alan for your contribution to PHS! We are lucky to have you here!!
