At the PUPs Spelling Bee held on Friday, January 31st, 8th-grader Sophie Choate came away victorious by spelling the word POSTPONABLE. She defeated Eli Griffin in the final round when he stumbled on the word DEMARCATE.
Tying for 3rd place were Teresa Gao and Marie Li. Other spellers were Samantha Paredes, Steven Trujillo-Chang, Camille Smith, Adam Lewis, Madelyn Bolton, Bailey Morris, Eliza Larkin and Paul Howard.
Sophie and Eli made it through more than twenty rounds of spelling to get to the final round, fighting through such words as oleander, genoise, excoriate, laureate, aubergine, sotto voce, and portmanteau.
Sophie is no stranger to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. She has been to the Regional Spelling Bee 4 times already. Last year she took 2nd place at the Regional Bee, and as a 6th grader, she won the regional title and then competed at the National Spelling Bee in Maryland.
Sophie will compete at the Regional Spelling Bee on February 22nd. Good luck, Sophie! May your competition be propitious indeed!
