Provo High’s eagerly anticipated academic competition, the 10th annual Knowledge Bowl, concluded with several spirited rounds. The winning team was the Porter team, with the Larson team coming in a close second.
The Knowledge Bowl is a competition between teams of four (with an alternate able to compete if a team member is absent). Questions come from the core academic areas along with some trivia. The first team to buzz in gets the chance to answer the question. Correct answers are worth two points, incorrect answers result in a one point deduction.
In the 2014 competition held between January 15 and February 6, 10 teams competed in a double elimination tournament. The winning team (repeating as Champs for the second year) was the Porter team composed of Margot Porter, Rachel Uhl, Abbie Maio, Kevin Torgerson and Talavao Folaumahina.
They defeated the Larson team, who fought back through the losers’ bracket and forced a final playoff by handing the Porter team their only defeat of the tournament in the first Championship round. The Larson team (composed of Sophomores) then narrowly lost in the final, intense round. This team is composed of Ben Larson, Sheridan Harding, Julian Eagar, Madeline McFarland and Alan Beukers.
Taking third was the Sabins team, with team members Tyler Sabins, Parker Henrie, Keith Doud, Christopher Witte and Tyler Howarth.
