The Provo High School Dive Team was created in the Fall of 2013. Dive Team members include Christopher Stubbs (9th grade) and Cristian Espinoza (9th Grade/Freedom Academy). The High School State Diving Competition was held at BYU on February 13th in conjunction with the State Swim Meet. Fourteen high schools were represented in the Boys’ and Girls’ State Diving competition. High school diving is a sport where divers do 6 different dives off of the 1 meter diving board. They are required to complete a dive from each category: forward, backward, reverse, inward, twister, and free choice. Difficulty of dives go from a simple dive head first into the water to a front 2 ½ pike (which is 2 flips in the air while holding onto straight legs in a hamstring stretch and then going into the water headfirst).
Christopher Stubbs took 3rd place and Cristian took 7th place in the boys’ overall competition. The combined total of their scores qualified PHS to take home the State Trophy! USA Diving Club Regionals were held at BYU in March and Christopher Stubbs placed 4th on the 3 meter board, qualifying him for Spring Nationals which will be held April 24th-26th in Riverside, California. Christopher’s favorite dive is a back 2 ½ tuck off the 3 meter (high dive).
Can you do killer flips on the trampoline? Did you do gymnastics growing up? If so, you may be perfect for Springboard Diving. For more information about being on the Dive Team, please contact Shanna Stubbs at 801-616-1210.
Congratulations Christopher and Cristian!
