Dear Provo High Students, Staff, and Patrons:
I am so excited to begin the 2013-14 School year; we have some very exciting things happening!! Our academic goal is “FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION.” To help achieve our goal, Academic Intervention time is being implemented this year. Students will be given time Tuesday – Friday from 7:00 am – 8:00 am to spend an hour with their teachers to be given additional time and support for learning.
As you have probably seen, the 3.2 million dollar Provo High School athletic complex is under construction and is on schedule to open in August (information about our grand opening is forthcoming). Thank you to the Provo School Board of Education for approving this state of the art facility that will include restrooms, team rooms, concessions, and new home bleachers. The proposal also includes the installation of a multi-purpose synthetic (turf) field and a new 8-lane track. The stadium will not only provide an outstanding facility for this year’s football season, it will also house a variety of activities as well, including track & field, soccer, and marching band.
The 2013-14 school year will be the final year that Provo High will offer the International Baccalaureate program. PHS is transitioning from the IB program and delving deeper into Advanced Placement and Concurrent Enrollment programs. Provo High is going to offer an AP Scholar award program, and, as part of the AP scholar program, PHS will offer three new AP courses in 2013-14 and an additional six more for the 2014-15 school year. Provo High will offer 20 AP classes, multiple honors courses, and extended study courses through Utah Valley University throughout the day.
Under the guidance of our Counselors and our College and Career Coordinator, Helen Patterson, 1/3 of the 2012-13 graduating class received over $3,100,000 dollars in scholarship funding for college. I expect the class of 2013-14 to receive even more scholarship funding. Provo High graduates have long been committed to achieving excellence and success. Our graduates have gone on to become CEO’s, national and state legislators, professional athletes, and even a Nobel Laureate. PHS is committed to producing college and career-ready graduates.
Provo High School has an amazing staff, administrative team, and teachers that put in countless hours to help our students succeed. I would like to thank them for all that they do.
It is a great time to be a BULLDOG!! The student council theme for the 2013-14 school year is “Unite and Fight.” Let’s continue to unite to be the best school possible!!!
Sincerely, Mr. Schoonover,
