Senior Information
- Canvas Course
- Each year we invite all the seniors to join the “Senior Assemblers” canvas course.
- In this course seniors will get announcements and links for senior events, scholarship opportunities, college application information, FAFSA information, and other senior activities throughout the year.
- We also announce prize winners for the different prizes we give out during UCAW and some of the other senior activities.
- Parents, if you would like to stay informed on the different activities and announcements for your student, you can join the Senior Assemblers canvas course as an observer. Just send an email to lamrine@provo.edu and specify that you would like to be added to stay up-to-date. Once it is set up, I will send an invitation for you to join and you will just need to accept the invite.
- New Scholarship Resources
- Scholarships can be found both within the Senior Assemblers Canvas Course (Under Modules → Scholarships) or on the PHS Counseling Center Website at the bottom left corner under College & Career Center. I am working on a new system of organizing scholarships so that they are easy to find for students and parents.
- Scholarships are being organized by monthly due date on this new scholarship page. There will also be tabs on this page specific to certain sections, such as undocumented student resources or Provo Elementary School Scholarships. In the past, scholarships were organized using a Google Spreadsheet. This spreadsheet is still available and I am working on verifying which scholarships are currently still available.
- Merit scholarships – These are awarded to the student by the institution the student will be attending and they are based on a student’s grades and ACT/SAT scores.
- Provo High Private Scholarships – these scholarships are awarded only to PHS students. More information will be posted about these in the beginning of March. These will also be posted on the scholarship page linked above under their own tab.
- *Regular announcements about scholarships will be posted on the Senior Assemblers Canvas Course.*
- College Access Advisor (Utah College Advising Corps)
- Our College Access Advisor (also called a UCAC Advisor) is located in our College and Career Center Lab (A143). Their primary role is to help students in the senior class prepare for life after graduation. They can help with college applications, scholarships, and the FAFSA and they are here all day, every day, just for our seniors. This year our UCAC Advisor is Makayla Broschinsky and her email is Makaylabr@provo.edu.
- Timeline of Events
- Provo High has many programs only open to seniors. I will make announcements as events approach within the Senior Assemblers canvas course.
- Our soonest upcoming event is Utah College Application Week (UCAW) from October 7th – 10th.
- Sterling Scholars
- This is a scholarship competition that requires students to submit an application along with a portfolio concentrating on 1 to 3 categories of academics. Students should read through the information page so they know what they are committing to. We are not given the dates for the actual Region competition until December or January and if a student is not able to make an interview date in person, they are automatically disqualified.
- Our English teacher Jazmin Kitchen is now over the Sterling Scholars Program for Provo High! Please email her at jazmink@provo.edu.
- Utah College Application Week (UCAW)
- Every October seniors are able to complete college applications for institutions they are interested in attending. We dedicate a week to this event where seniors can get help from college representatives while filling out applications.
- Application fees for Utah colleges (with the exception of BYU) are now WAIVED for students.
- During this week, Jostens also comes to the school to help students order their cap and gown for graduation. When students order their cap and gown this week of the year, Josten’s will put their name in a drawing for a free cap and gown or a free class ring. It is also cheaper to order your gap and gown during this week than it will be later in the year. Jostens hands out their graduation packet the first day of UCAW and collects graduation orders throughout the week at lunch in the Presentations Room.
- Beyond High School Night/FAFSA Information Night
- This is a big information night and resource fair. We invite all of our college admissions reps so parents can ask questions about the schools and they can answer any questions the students may have wanted to ask during UCAW but ran out of time. We also bring in other groups for students who are unsure if they want to attend traditional college but are looking for career opportunities after high school. During this event we will also give students and their parents the opportunity to create their StudentAid.gov account to complete the FAFSA later in December. Creating the account early helps to troubleshoot and streamline the process when it’s time to fill out the FAFSA.
- FAFSA Nights
- Completing the FAFSA can be intimidating without help. At our FAFSA Nights we will have helpers who can answer questions and assist with filling out the FAFSA. We will also have Spanish speakers available to help during these events. Completing the FAFSA is confidential and secure. We are here to help answer your questions and get your student as much financial assistance as possible for their post-graduate plans.
- CTE Pathway Completion Application
- Starting this year, students who think they have completed a pathway will be required to apply for that pathway. If they believe they have completed more than one pathway, they will need to complete an application for EACH pathway they would like to receive recognition for.
- Please refer to Yazmin Montero who is our contact in charge of CTE Pathways. Her email is yazminm@provo.edu.
- CTE Pathway Cords and Letters
- These are a recognition for a student’s academic achievement in a CTE Pathway area. Students must complete 3.0 full credits with a “C” average or better in order to qualify for a CTE pathway cord. The credits are specific to the pathway and a student can talk to their counselor or Ms. Montero for a list of those courses needed for the pathway they are trying to complete.
- Students who complete 1 pathway are qualified for a single CTE cord. A student who completes 2 or more pathways qualifies for a double cord. Every pathway comes with a letter from the state and a certificate for the student’s portfolio. Students who are interested in this recognition will be required to complete an application found with Ms. Montero. Pathway cords are no longer automatically awarded.
- Concurrent Enrollment Cords
- Will also require the completion of an application. Students will be required to download an unofficial transcript from the colleges they have gained college credit. Keep in mind students must have a 2.0 or C average in their college courses to qualify for these cords.
- Please refer to Yazmin Montero who is our contact in charge of Concurrent Enrollment. Her email is yazminm@provo.edu
- Application for our Student Graduation Speaker
- These will be available mid-March and due mid-April. This is a great opportunity for students interested in leadership to build their resume, but students must be prepared to submit their speech with their application and then to give their speech to the graduation committee in the interview. From the pool of applicants the applications are narrowed down to no more than 5 who will be invited to interview.
- Senior Decision Day
- This is a fun day for our seniors to celebrate their last year in public school. We start in the Auditorium, with graduation and other important announcements! We will be giving out great prizes. Students must be in attendance at the time their name is called in order to claim their prize; otherwise it will be given to the next name drawn. We give out gift cards, TVs, mini fridges, etc. during this part of the festivities and then from there seniors will celebrate with a party and treats (to be announced!)
- Career Signing Day
- This a time to celebrate our seniors who have completed a CTE program and then started their career in that CTE area. Our district CTE department hosts lunch for these students, their parents, and their new employer. If you fall into this category of employment, see Ms. Amrine in A143 and let her know so you can be included in this event. You have until mid-April to let Ms. Amrine know.
- Academic Letters
- Letters are a way to award excellence in a program. The application for academic letters are due in May. academic letters will be awarded at our Senior Awards Night. The application for academic letters will be posted in the Senior Assemblers Canvas course when they become available.
- Graduation Information
- Information about graduation is disseminated throughout the year through student/parent emails but some information comes to students as we get closer to the end of the school year. Again information/announcements are made through the Senior Assemblers Canvas course ande through email sent directly to students and parents. It is important to read these emails so you know what is going on and don’t miss anything!
