Syllabus
Course Description/Overview/Welcome Statement
Should you fail a course with more than 30% and/or earn a score of 2 on at least half of the term standards, you may apply with your school counselor for a credit recovery course. If you do not meet that minimum standard you will not have an option for credit recovery. You must arrange with your school counselor an opportunity for a course that offers “original credit” to meet that graduation requirement.
GAP Study Skills course was credited to allow students to have an opportunity at school to recover course/s that they failed or to take a course for original credit that isn’t offered at PHS, course that is needed doesn’t fit into their schedule or because a student has failed a course but wants to meet NCAA qualification. A student registered in the GAP Study Skills course is not to use this class as a Study Hall unless all of the courses assigned by their counselor have been completed.
Learning Expectations
The student is expected to work on the course modules and the module quizzes as well as complete and pass the final assessment with 60% on the course/s that their counselor has assigned to them. After the counselor assigns the courses needed, if the course is on Canvas, I will post courses that are assigned to the student. These courses will be posted on their Canvas account under courses. When the course is first assigned the student MUST accept the course on the notice that pops up.
Students are NOT to use this class period to work on homework from other classes unless all their GAP courses have been completed or the teacher gives permission. With 87 minute class times, the student may use the last 27 minutes to continue on with their GAP course or do homework. These 27 minutes are not a time to socialize.
Assessment of Progress
Grading of Standards
Standards defined – a standard is a recovery course, an original credit course or a paper packet.
Students, teachers, and parents can monitor student progress on Canvas at provo.instructure.com and PowerSchool.
The student’s grade will be recorded in PowerSchool at the end of each two-week period.
- Grade awarded is a P if the student completed their standard/s – F if you did not
- There will be a total of 4 two-week standard periods in each term.
- Each recovery or original credit course assigned by their counselor constitutes a standard.
- To receive a “P” grade and 0.25 elective credits they must complete all four standards or have completed the courses assigned and continue in class until the end of the term. The period can then be used as the student deems necessary.
Student’s GAP course grade will be visible to the parent at the end of each Standard due date. Every two weeks the grades will be posted and if the student meets the standard deadline, they will retain the P grade. If the student fails to meet the standard deadline, the student will receive an F grade until that standard/recovery course is successfully completed. Not meeting the deadline usually implies that the student chose to do something other than working on the standard/recovery course.

Personal Statement and other items (optional)
In GAP class, I strive to encourage each student to do their best and continue their attempts at learning–for, I strongly believe what Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kala, an aerospace scientist and politician who served as the 11th President of India, stated: “If you fail, never give up because of F. A. I. L. means “First Attempt In Learning”.
I also believe that an assessment grade simply reflects the amount of knowledge the student has retained, and it does not indicate the student is a failure as a person. We also assess to see what we still need to learn to complete the course standards required.
In addition to myself we have other access to tutors that can help the student.
