Course Description/Overview/Welcome Statement
Secondary Math 2
1 Credit (Core credit)
Prerequisite: Secondary Math I
(Placed by ability not grade level)
Students in Secondary Mathematics II will focus on quadratic expressions, equations, and functions, extend the set of rational numbers to the set of complex numbers, link probability and data through conditional probability and counting methods, study similarity and right triangle trigonometry, and study circles with their quadratic algebraic representations.
The students grade will be based on the following criteria:
35% of the grade is from assignment scores
20% of the grade is from power-standard quiz scores (a student must score at least 8 out of 10 to get credit)
45% of the grade is from chapter exams
Assessment of Progress
Homework assignments will be given each day (Due the next class period)
Power-standard quizzes will be given intermittently (usually 1 or 2 per chapter)
Exams will be given at the end of each chapter.
Each student will need something to bring their textbook (Big Ideas “Integrated Math II” ), paper, and a pencil or pen to write with.
Each student will have access to a scientific calculator for classroom use. If you would like to have one at home as well we will be using the TI-30XS multiview (but any scientific calculator will work).
Each student is expected to come prepared each day with their textbook, paper and pencil/pen, and the previous class period’s completed assignment.
We will follow the Provo High 20/20 rule: Which is “Students are not allowed to leave the classroom within the first twenty minutes or the last twenty minutes of class.” Students will only be allowed to leave for emergencies during the other 50 minutes. Plan on being in class the entire time.
Cell Phones: We will follow the Provo High policy on cell phones which is :
1st violation– phone is taken by teacher and be picked up by student after school. 2nd violation– phone is taken by teacher and sent to the office- parent will be required to pick up phone. 3rd violation– administrative action and possible suspension.
Make up work is accepted until the Friday before the term ends , but may result in a reduced score.
Power-standard quizzes may be retaken until the minimum score of 80% is reached.
Chapter tests may also be retaken ONCE, provided that the student has spent some time with me, or someone else to review, and/or re-learn the material.
