Class: Literacy B
Class Description: Literacy B is a resource class developed to increase students reading and writing skills. We do this by dividing students into small groups to give more student to teacher instruction. One group is with the teacher in direct instruction of reading and writing. Group 2 is reading, spelling, video’s that introduce reading and writing. Group 3 will be Independent reading books on each students reading level. In the independent reading area, students will be expected to finish at least 12 pages a day and pass the comprehension assessments with 70% or better after finishing their book. They also must write at least 4 sentences in their reading logs in this order topic sentence, 2 supporting details, and a conclusion sentence using 3 transition words. On the computer they will finish a segment for every 10 sessions logged in to insure they are working and passing each section of the program. Then the final part of the grade will be to finish all assignments in the Real book with 70-80% accuracy this is where they will increase writing skills learn grammar and work on reading comprehension skills. If students will do these things, they will increase their reading Lexile score at least 50 points after taking the RI. Objective Students will increase their reading and writing skills (spelling, Summary skills) at least 1 grade level within a year or go up at least 50 points over the year on their Reading inventory Lexile score. Homework Each student will finish class work in the classroom. But, as part of their grade, each student will read at least 20 minutes each night in a book of their choice and bring a reading log on fridays summarizing the pages they read each day.
Progress Monitoring/Grading Policy Progress on IEP goals will be monitored and documented. You will receive a summary of progress at the end of each term at approximately the same time report cards are disbursed. Grades will be based on punctuality, class participation, appropriate behavior, progress made toward IEP goals, and scores on class assignments.
Percent grade 100-93 A 92-90 A- 89-87 B+ 86-83 B 82-80 B- 79-77 C+ 76-73 C 72-70 C- 69-60 D P grade indicates student passed but doesn’t get credit towards graduation. I grade means student may get a grade if they finish assignments before a certain date after grades were due.
Grade changes may occur for lower percentages according to each individual IEP goal.
Attendance Provo High School’s attendance policy will be in affect unless your student’s IEP indicates otherwise. All assignments may be made up but only at 70% accuracy.
Dress: Students must be properly dressed or they will be sent to the office. Example: No shirts with inappropriate language or sexual pictures or words on them allowed. Boys and Girls must have shirts that cover their shoulders and shorts that cover their underwear.
Classroom Rules
Follow Teachers Instructions Stay On Task Ask permission Use appropriate Language Respect others No bathroom breaks until work is done Phones must be used only at teachers permission. If teachers see’s Phones out when they are not suppose to they will be collected and put into the phone box until class is over.
If students fail to obey these rules they will be taken out of the class. It is a privilege to be in this class.
