Math 1050 (CE) – Syllabus
Course Description/Overview/Welcome Statement
College Algebra (CE)
1 credit (high school)
3 credits (UVU)
Prerequisites: successful completion of math 1010 (C or better) or an ACT math score of 23 or better , or an accuplacer score of 60 or higher , or an ALEKS (replaces the accuplacer) score of 56 or higher
This course will include a study of inequalities, functions and their graphs, polynomial and rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, systems of linear and nonlinear equations, matrices and determinants, arithmetic and geometric sequences, and the Binomial Theorem
Learning Expectations
We will be covering the following sections from the textbook.
Chapter 3: sections 3.1 – 3.7
Chapter 4: sections 4.1 – 4.5
Chapter 5: sections 5.1 – 5.5
Chapter 6: sections 6.1 – 6.5 and linear programming
Chapter 7: sections 7.1 – 7.4
Chapter 9: sections 9.1 – 9.3, and 9.6
Assessment of Progress
Tests will be given at the end of each chapter or chapters (some chapters will be combined)
A comprehensive final will be given at the end of the course.
The grade will be based on the following criteria:
Homework/assignments will account for 10% of the grade
Chapter Tests will account for 65% of the grade
Final Exam will account for 25% of the grade.
Course Materials
The textbook that we will be using for this course is college algebra, 4th edition, Stewart, Redlin and Watson
Each student will need to have their textbook, paper, pen/pencil each day
Students may use a scientific calculator (No graphing calculators). I will have some (TI-30xs multiview) to use in class but if you need one to use at home any scientific calculator will do.
Classroom Procedures
Homework is the personal responsibility of the student. It is necessary to complete all homework assignments to master the concepts of this course. Homework will be due the class period following the test. Homework turned in at any other time will be considered late. Late homework will be worth 70%. It is expected that each student will check their homework using the answers in the back of the book. Homework will be graded on completion (assuming that you have checked and corrected it)
Tests will be given at the end of each chapter or chapters. UVU DOES NOT ALLOW ANY RETAKES OR TEST CORRECTIONS. MAKE SURE YOU ARE PREPARED FOR EACH TEST!
The final will be a comprehensive test given in class the last week of the semester.

It will also be available on Powerschool. If you don’t have access to the internet I can provide you with a printed progress report.
