Course Description/Overview/Welcome Statement
Intermediate Algebra (CE)
1 math credit (high school)
4 elective credits (UVU)
Topics of study include linear and quadratic equations and inequalities, polynomials and rational expressions, radical and exponential expressions and equations, complex numbers, systems of linear and nonlinear equations, logarithmic and exponential functions and real world applications of algebra.
Learning Expectations
We will be covering the following sections from the textbook.
Chapter Two: 2.1–2.7
Chapter Three: 3.1–3.5, 3.7
Chapter Four: 4.1–4.3, 4.5
Chapter Five: 5.1 objectives 1–4, 5.2 objectives 1–2, 5.3–5.8
Chapter Six: 6.1–6.6
Chapter Seven: 7.1–7.7
Chapter Eight: 8.1–8.6
Chapter Nine: 9.1–9.3, 9.5–9.8
Chapter Ten: 10.1 objectives 2–4
Assessment of Progress
Tests will be given at the end of each chapter or chapters (some chapters will be combined)
A comprehensive final will be given at the end of the course.
The grade will be based on the following criteria:
Homework/assignments will account for 15% of the grade
Chapter Tests will account for 60% of the grade
Final Exam will account for 25% of the grade.
Course Materials
The textbook that we will be using for this course is Intermediate Algebra: Elayn Martin-Gay 6th edition
Each student will need to have their textbook, paper, pen/pencil each day.
Students may use a scientific calculator (No graphing calculators). I will have some (TI-30xs multiview) to use in class but if you need one to use at home any scientific calculator will do.
Classroom Procedures
Attendance will be taken each class period.
All policies for phones, tardies, etc. will follow the Provo High policies.
It is necessary to complete all homework assignments to master the concepts of the course. Homework will be due the class period following the test. Homework turned in at any other time will be considered late. Late homework will be worth 50% if it is one day late.
UVU DOES NOT ALLOW ANY RETAKES OR TEST CORRECTIONS. MAKE SURE YOU ARE PREPARED FOR EACH TEST!

Progress Reports and Report Cards
The student may see their grade on Canvas by logging in to uvu.instructure.com
It will also be available on Powerschool. If you don’t have access to the internet I can provide you with a printed progress report.
