American Sign Language 1-4 Disclosure Document & Syllabus
Teacher: Jamila Hubbard Provo High School
Welcome to a wonderful, exciting year of ASL. I have many fantastic plans and ideas of helping you excel in your journey through ASL and Deaf culture. I look forward to the possibilities ahead this year and hoping you share in the excitement.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to provide students with technical skills needed to use simple and basic ASL. Throughout the year we will be using the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of the Foreign Language) standards in order to develop your proficiency and understanding of ASL. This course will include vocabulary, grammar, a basic understanding of the history of language, the Deaf culture, and the Deaf community.
ATTENDANCE: Regular, on time, attendance is necessary for optimal success in this class. School attendance policies will be followed and students will be able to make up missed assignments for excused absences only. If a student is absent, they will have an alternate assignment to make up any lost participation points. Students need to be present every day to receive the information learned in class. Excessive absences will result in consultation with administration and parental involvement. Any student who has 10 absences (excused or unexcused) may receive an incomplete for their grade which could result in a loss of credit for that class.
ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES: Common assessment procedures will include, but not limited to: quizzes, tests, homework, class activities, projects, class participation and written assignments. Quizzes and tests will cover any information in the assigned textbook reading, class discussions, handouts, lectures and other activities. Students will be notified about tests at least two school days prior to the exam. Students absent when the test is announced will still be required to take the test with the class. Students with unexcused absences will NOT be able to make up the test and will receive a zero.
MAKE UP WORK: All make up work needs to be completed and turned in to obtain credit. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain their make-up work. Assignments: Students will have one day for each absence to make up missed work. Quizzes & Tests: Students will have ONE WEEK from their return to school to make up quizzes and/or tests. The student must set a time to make up the test with the teacher. Students can schedule a time with the teacher to make up any tests. If the student “forgets to show up” for their scheduled time, the student will receive a zero for that assessment.
EXTRA CREDIT: Extra credit will only be assigned to an entire class and not on an individual basis. Deaf literature is available in the classroom. Students are allowed one book report each semester for extra credit.
GRADING POLICY: Term grades will be assigned using the following percentage scale:

CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR: The following class rules are listed to define general classroom behavior: RESPECT the teacher, fellow classmates and yourself. RESPECT American Sign Language and the Deaf culture. RESPECT all school and personal property. RESPONSIBILITY for all actions. Listen and follow all directions. NO cell phones!!!! Follow all Provo High rules as defined in the student handbook. Have FUN!!!!
These rules are general and are established to create a positive learning environment. Any behavior that interferes with instruction or a student’s right to learn will not be tolerated.
PARTICIPATION POLICY: Participation in this class is mandatory. Participation includes being in class on time, being prepared for class and being willing to work. In ASL there will be times when no talking will be allowed. In order to try to truly immerse the students in an environment where they may successfully learn the language, this type of environment is necessary.
**NOTE** You will be given TEN points a day for participation. The ways you can lose your points are: sleeping in class, absences, skipping/ditching class, tardiness, use of electronic devices and talking during SIGNING time.
TARDIES: Students who enter class after bell rings will lose participation points. If a student continually comes into class late, administration and parents will be notified.
MATERIALS REQUIRED: Students need to bring a writing utensil, notebook paper and three ring binder and/or folder to class every day. I highly recommend that you have some kind of place to keep ALL of your ASL materials.
ASSIGNMENTS: All assignments will be due as specified by the teacher. Each semester, students will be required to attend a Deaf Culture Event (an interpreted play, an open caption movie, Deaf Awareness Week activity). The event must be pre-approved by the teacher. Students will have to provide proof of the event and write a one-page summary. LATE WORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
