CAD Architectural Design 2 & 3
Course Description/Overview/Welcome Statement
Welcome to CAD Architectural Design 2/3! The second in a sequence of courses that prepare individuals for careers in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. In Architecture 2 (1st semester) you will receive instruction in 3D Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software and learn to design and model a small residential home with an emphasis on residential methods and materials of construction, codes, and Building Information Modeling (BIM). In Architecture 3 (2nd semester) you will model a small commercial building with an emphasis on commercial methods and materials of construction, codes, and Building Information Modeling (BIM).
Learning Expectations
In order to earn credit, students will need to master each standard in the course. Student will show mastery by completing drawing assignments that demonstrate competence. When a student does not achieve mastery, it is expected that they will work with their teacher during class time or outside class to achieve mastery. Each assignment will be graded for correct solutions, completeness and neatness.
Assessment of Progress
Formative and Summative Assessments
Students, teachers, and parents can monitor student progress on PowerSchool. Student understanding of each standard in the course will be assessed through a variety of assessments, including notes, drawings, quizzes and test. All scores will be reported on PowerSchool. Accommodations for students with an IEP, 504, or ELL classification will be made on an individual basis.
Success Criteria
Students will need to achieve a minimum level of mastery (at least 80%) on essential formative assessments (usually drawing assignments). Assignments and tests can be attempted multiple times until the student shows mastery, (State CTE exams can only be attempted once). Success criteria for each assessment will be discussed in class.
Academic Letter
Some students may wish to achieve a CAD Mechanical or CAD Architectural Academic Letter while completing this course. This involves additional assignments and a higher level of competence. Students successfully completing the Upper Level both terms can apply for an Academic Letter at the end of the school year.
Course Materials
Bring a pen or pencil (all other materials will be provided)
Classroom Procedures
Attendance
This course follows the Provo High School Attendance Policy. Students should attend class each day to keep from missing instruction and assignments. When a student is unable to attend, he/she will then be allowed to make up his/her work on his/her own time (within the term). Arriving on time will be vitally important as most instruction will be given at the beginning of the period. It is the state CTE policy that a student with 5 or more consecutive, unexcused absences will be dropped from the class.
Grading
Student grades will be based on mastery of standards. Mastery is demonstrated by completing drawing assignments and passing exams. Scores can be monitored on PowerSchool, and are updated at least weekly. Final term grades will be an average of the student’s assessment and assignment scores for that term.
Assignments & Late Work
The purpose of assignments is to help students learn the concepts needed to prepare them to achieve mastery on the assessments. Most work should be completed during class time, but some homework or after school work may be necessary to complete work that wasn’t finished in class. The final deadline for all term work is the last day of the term.
Behavior
Being in class, paying attention and completing assignments are the keys to success in this class. This class is a computer lab. Respect for other students, the teacher, and the computer equipment is mandatory. Appropriate student behavior also includes following Technology expectations (see below). A student that leaves the classroom without permission, for any period of time, will obtain an absence for that day. Leaving class before the bell rings will be considered leaving class without permission. Standing by the door until the bell rings is an unacceptable practice. It is the student’s responsibility to properly inform their instructor of any special health considerations.
Technology
Students will use computers on a daily basis, accessing the internet and files through their school assigned account. We expect students to adhere to the Provo School District Acceptable Use Policy. Students who abuse technology will be reported and lose school-wide access to the devices according to policy. Vandalism of any type in this classroom will be grounds for failure of this class and possible expulsion from school. Personal electronic devices (e.g. cell phones, Switch) should be off and out of sight. If students use these items inappropriately during class, they may be confiscated and given to school administration as per school policy.
Calendar of Due Dates for Major Assignments
Normally there will be one or two assignments or assessments completed each day in class. These will be reflected in the grade within a week. Only the State Competency exam at the end of the semester cannot be retaken or made-up. Refer to PowerSchool for a list of current assignments.
Progress Reports and Report Cards
Each assignment will be graded for correct solutions, completeness and neatness. Assignments must be turned-in within a week of the due date. Late assignments may be given a 50% deduction. At the end of the term, grades will be calculated based on the number of points earned on all assignments and assessments out of the total points possible. Grades will be assigned according to the district grade scale.
