I welcome you to another exciting year of Russian.
This will be another fun and intense class and will require your continued dedication and time in and out of the class. You will continue to learn the Russian language and with your continued willing participation and work with other students, will become more proficient in the Russian language.
This class is intended for students in grades 9, 10, 11 and/or 12.
You will receive 1 elective credit for completing this class.
This year we will refresh and continue to learn the Cyrillic alphabet. We will also work more on using this alphabet writing and understand the Russian language. We will also further our learning of Russian grammar, culture, history and songs as well as discussing current events dealing with Russia. And as before we will learn to sing and or refresh our knowledge of several authentic Russian Songs in Russian.
Assessment of Progress
Students will be assessed regularly through written quizzes, tests and writing assignments, as well as through oral conversations, tests, and interviews.
Students may be asked to work on one or more lab projects which will be presented to the class during class time in Russian. These projects will be assessed for language competency and may or may not be included in the final grade.
Students will be expected to show growth and learning throughout the course by improving their ability to use the Russian language.
We will be using the “Nachalo” textbook with all of its supplemental materials, including audio and video files.
Movies: We will be watching several movies in class that are in Russian and some that are in English that deal with past or current Russian history, culture and ongoing situations or that will help in the use of and aid in the learning of the Russian Language. Movies include but are not limited to: Irony of Fate, Irony of Fate 2, Ballad of a Soldier, and others as appropriate.
Students are expected to come to class prepared and ready to participate every day of class. The following items are required to be with the student each day:
- Class notebook with lined paper to take notes and study out of.
- Pen and or Pencil to write and take note with.
- All assignments that are due that particular day and study materials.
Students are required to stay current on all assignments, readings, quizzes, tests, etc.
General Information and Rules:
- All school rules and policies as outlined in the PHS Student Handbook and PHS Operating Policies and Procedures Handbook will be enforced in Mr. Bradley’s class. This includes dress code, attendance and cheating policies, etc.
- No hats, cell phone use, I-pods or other electronic devices will be allowed in class! (Unless approval is given by the teacher beforehand.) All items will be confiscated and turned in to the administration.
- The students are expected to keep the room neat and orderly. No littering, graffiti or writing on desks, wall, posters, etc. is allowed.
- No food or drink allowed in class unless previously arranged. This will be on a case by case basis.
Homework will generally not be assigned, but students are expected to study all class materials on a daily basis to ensure language learning and retention.
Calendar of Due Dates for Major Assignments
All due dates will be determined by the pace of each class.
Finals will be given during the last week of each term and semester.
Progress Reports and Report Cards
Grades will be given according to each student’s overall performance which includes preparedness, participation, quiz and test scores as well as classwork and homework. There may be possibilities for extra credit, however, students must check with the teacher for specific details.
We also be learning several Russian songs, which students will perform in front of other foreign language classes in a public setting. These are graded so it is important for students to participate in the in class practices and rehearsals.
Grading is based on the Provo School District grading scale:
A 93%-100% A- 90%-93%
B+ 87%-89% B 83%-86% B- 80%-82%
C+ 77%-79% C 73%-76% C- 70%-72%
F 59% or below
