Course Description: This is the first of three courses under the Utah Core Standards. These topics include solving equations, inequalities, systems of equations and inequalities, functions (linear and exponential), descriptive statistics in both one and two variables (categorical and numerical), transformations in the plane, congruence, constructions and coordinate geometry.
Philosophy: One of my main objectives is to teach students how to be problem solvers, to think logically and abstractly and how to have good habits as a student. Math is challenging for most people and when students are successful in math they learn skills that will help them in all areas of their life (not just in future math classes). Goals: The fundamental purpose of this course is to formalize and extend the mathematics that students learned in the middle grades. The critical areas, organized into units, deepen and extend understanding of linear relationships, in part by contrasting them with exponential phenomena, and in part by applying linear models to data that exhibit a linear trend. The course uses properties and theorems involving congruent figures to deepen and extend understanding of geometric knowledge from prior grades. The final unit in the course ties together the algebraic and geometric ideas studied. The Mathematical Practice Standards apply throughout each course and, together with the content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations.
Classroom Expectations: 1. Bring your calculator, notebook, pencil, and pen every day. Phones are NOT a substitute for a calculator. If you are unable to purchase a calculator please contact me and we can go over some options. Recommended calculator brand: TI-30 series 2. SHOW UP (don’t just “show up”) Be attentive and ready to participate. 3. Work quietly and remain in your seat unless you have permission to do otherwise. 4. No electronic devices are allowed to be powered on in the classroom. They will be collected and given to the office. 5. Respect of self, teacher, and others. Attendance: Attendance and punctuality are ESSENTIAL components of the learning process. We will follow the Timpview High School Attendance Procedures.
Make-up Work: If a student is absent, it is their responsibility to find out what was missed and complete it. If a student misses a day an assignment is due, they will be required to turn it in the first day they return to school. Arrangements for problems beyond the student control can be discussed with the teacher.
Grading Policy: Your work will be graded in 4 areas: tests and mastery quizzes (75%), homework (15%), classwork (10%).
Tests and Mastery Quizzes: Assessments are a major component of the student’s grade and are a good indicator of the material they have learned. To have grades reflect better the student’s knowledge of the concepts we will be doing mastery quizzes along with tests. Students will take mastery quizzes throughout the unit to make sure they are understanding each concept from that unit. At the end of the unit they will take a test that covers all the material from that unit. If the student wishes to retake the test they must show me that they have passed (85% or higher) all of their mastery quizzes before they can retake the test. Mastery Quizzes count as mini test scores towards their grade, thus students will want to do well on them. In order to retake a mastery quiz, proof of homework completed is needed. IF a student is absent the day of the test then they cannot retake the test.
Homework: Students can expect homework each class period, except on occasionally a test day. Each homework assignment is worth 10 points and for every day a homework assignment is late one point will be docked. No homework will be accepted after the deadline that will be determined for each unit throughout each term.
Classwork: Throughout each term we will be doing activities and taking notes that will be 10 percent of the students grades.
Grading Scale: A 94-100, A- 90-93, B+ 87-89, B 84-86, B- 80-83, C+ 77-79, C 74-76, C- 70-73, D+ 67-69, D 64-66, D- 60-63, F 0-59
