Report on Student Survey

Creation of Attendance Committee MTSS for Attendance Attendance Survey

  • Survey Results A survey was conducted with 490 students participating. The results will be reviewed and further analyzed to inform upcoming strategies.
  • Full Circle Feedback It was suggested to conduct a full-circle feedback survey at the end of the school year. This would gather input from both students and teachers to assess overall progress and identify areas for improvement.
  •  Life Skills Through Challenging Class Placements An idea was presented to consider the life skills students learn when placed in challenging situations. For example, placing students in classes where they are out of their comfort zone (with unfamiliar teachers and peers) could teach them valuable skills like managing deadlines and adapting to new environments. Teachers should encourage students to rise to challenges as these experiences may help students grow.
  • Positive Reinforcement for Students Teachers should actively welcome students into the classroom to create a positive and inclusive environment. Reinforcement of good behavior and positive achievements will help motivate students.
  • Peer Support System It was recommended that teachers assign a student to help another student catch up on missed work. The possibility of involving Teaching Assistants (TAs) to support this system was discussed.
  • Attendance and Makeup Work For students who have missed classes, a plan should be developed to help them succeed and pass the course, considering alternative ways to complete the coursework. Teachers may give credit for work done without necessarily assigning a grade. Clarification is needed regarding the school’s policy on makeup work, with teachers encouraged to include this in their course disclosure documents.
  • Communication and Engagement Auto phone calls should be used to keep parents and students informed about attendance and assignments. Digital hall passes could be implemented to streamline student movement within the school. An attendance committee is being considered to review and address issues related to student absenteeism.
  • Incentives for Student Engagement It was suggested that incentives such as “One Lunch” could be offered as a reward for student engagement or improvement.
  • Focus on ML and ESL Students It was noted that the majority of students are Multilingual (ML) and English as a Second Language (ESL) learners. High school Spanish-speaking students need to first focus on learning English, and consideration should be given to whether these students need only one class specifically designed to help them succeed. Encouraging administrators and adults to share their own experiences about learning English could help break barriers and motivate students.
  • Parent Engagement A parent night focused on “How to Use PowerSchool” was suggested as a way to increase parent involvement and awareness of their children’s academic progress. The possibility of holding these sessions during parent-teacher conferences was discussed. Additionally, it was proposed to provide students with the necessary information about what their families need to know during the school day, which could increase family engagement and understanding.
  • Conclusion The meeting concluded with a focus on enhancing student success through peer support, improved communication, and targeted strategies for ML and ESL learners. Further discussion will be held on implementing these ideas and monitoring progress.

Next Steps

Further research on survey results and feedback. Develop a plan for student support and peer mentoring. Clarify makeup work policies and integrate them into teacher disclosure documents. Plan for parent engagement initiatives.
