Community Council Meeting Minutes

Agenda Items & Discussion

1. Attendance

  • Chronic Absences: Discussed current concerns around student absences.
  • Incentives for Improved Attendance: Offer incentives such as one lunch per quarter, exclusion from dances, or cash rewards.
  • Assistant Principals’ Meeting with Students: Assistant principals are working directly with students on attendance concerns.
  • Online School Issues: Discussed difficulties with the online school curriculum. Plan to notify parents that it’s not an easy option and offer guidance.

2. Data Share

NWEA Data
  • Reviewed NWEA data for reading, math, and science.
  • Plan to Use Data to Enhance Reading Across the Curriculum:
    • Emphasis on AVID strategies, academic vocabulary, chunking text, and scaffolding best practices.
    • Consider creating dedicated support reading classes.
  • Math Class Ideas: Exploring ways to make daily reading classes work, including:
    • Summer sessions.
    • Selecting specific teachers for the task.
    • Looking at what middle schools are implementing.
  • Support Class: A teacher meets with students regularly to provide support and check grades. Teachers for the support class are carefully selected.
  • State Data: Data points considered include ACT scores (18+), completion of CTE and AP classes.
  • TSI (Targeted School Improvement): Currently falling below in some areas. Achievement points fluctuate.
  • Graduation Progress: Progress tracked through packets.

3. Plan Suggestions

CAPS (Center for Advanced Professional Studies)
  • Explore possible opportunities for students to engage in CAPS programs.
Potential New Programs
  • Food Truck: Considering options for food truck services.
  • EKG Machine Training: Proposal to offer this as part of vocational training.
CTE Pathway Classes
  • Discussed the possibility of offering Career and Technical Education pathway classes.
  • Ideas for student communication: Create informative videos and distribute them to families.
Sterling Scholar Pathway
  • Need to ensure students and families understand the process for earning a Sterling Scholar.
  • Counselors will provide additional information on the website.
Reading Incentive Programs
  • Discussed the introduction of a newsletter focusing on reading incentives.

4. Budget Discussion

Next Meeting Focus: Consider Provo High’s greatest needs for spending allocated funds.

  • Suggestions:
    • Additional math teacher.
    • Funding for teachers’ prep periods.

5. Signature Form

A reminder for members to complete and submit the necessary signature form.
