This past weekend on January 25th and 26th, Provo High School hosted the annual Provo High School Dancesport Championships. The event is in its 10th year and is the biggest high school Ballroom Dance competition in the State. This year the Championships also hosted the 1st time STATE High School Showdance Championships. Schools from around the State came and competed for the title of best showdance team. There were 5 categories that schools could enter: Latin Showdance, Standard Showdance, Swing Showdance, Theatre Arts Showdance and Large Group Showdance. Of these events, the Provo High School Varsity Ballroom Team entered two and took both the Latin and Standard Showdance titles. The Latin Showdance was a Cha Cha that received a unanimous 1st place vote from the judges. The Standard Showdance was a Polka that received four out of the five 1st place markings! The Varsity team also took 2nd place in the Latin and Standard Medley categories. (The state title for this event will take place on Feb. 15th.) The only team to pass them was a private studio from Idaho. The markings were only one mark away from a win. The last team event for the night was the Team Match where, once again, Provo High Varsity took 1st place! (The State title for this event will be held at BYU on March 7th.)
Along with the team events on Friday night, Saturday the 26th started at 8:00 AM and was filled with individual events until 11:45 PM. Hundreds of students in various events competed for those coveted 6 spots in the finals. Once again Provo High Varsity members represented their school well. Katelyn Eberhard and Alec Brockwell took the winning spots for the Youth Standard and Latin Syllabus events as well as placed in the finals of Youth Smooth. Along with these two students, we had many other couples make the finals of various events throughout the day. These couples include Nik Bichsel and Talissa Simpson, Jordan Downer and Lucy Black, Austin Olivas and Erynn Williams, and Jacob Reesor and Racquel Hansen. These students will be competing for the State Title in these same events on Feb. 15th at the UBEA State Title Match. They will also compete at the National Danceport Championships at BYU March 6-9th.
Thanks to Angela Williams and Dane Tolman for their hours and hours of work with these students! Congratulations Ballroom!
