Driver’s Education
Overview
The purpose of Driver’s Education is to develop the knowledge, attitudes, habits, and skills necessary for the safe operation of motor vehicles. At Provo High School, our instructors are committed to providing high-quality instruction to help students become responsible, knowledgeable, and skilled drivers on Utah roads.
Registration & Fees
- All registration must go through Wendy Bills.
- A copy of the student’s learner’s permit must be submitted with the registration form.
- Forms and the $200 fee must be submitted to the Provo High business office.
- Fee waivers are available only for Provo High students.
- Provo High students receive priority registration.
- Students living within Provo High boundaries but attending other schools will be placed on a waiting list and contacted if a spot becomes available.
- Students have 1 year to complete the entire course.
- Learner permits must remain current throughout the course.
Course Components
Online Course
Students will complete Provo High School’s online Driver Education curriculum, which includes:
- Rules of the road and Utah State Handbook laws
- “Drive Friendly” principles
- Effects of alcohol, drugs, emotions, and distractions like texting
- Sharing the road (construction zones, railroad crossings, pedestrian and school zones, bicycle safety)
- Traffic Safety and Trends Exam
- All students must complete the Traffic Safety and Trends exam at dld.utah.gov
- This is a state requirement
- Exam scores are automatically recorded by the Department of Licensing (DLD)
Behind-the-Wheel Instruction
Students will receive the required driving instruction through:
- Use of simulators
- Road driving practice
- 3 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a certified instructor
State Road Test
Provo High School is a certified State Testing Facility, authorized to administer the Utah State Road Exam. Students will sign up for the test with a Provo High Instructor after completing the course. Once students pass the State Road Test, they may go to the DLD and obtain their Class D driver license with youthful restrictions.

Pre-Drive Checklist:
- Lock doors and start vehicle (standard procedure)
- Locate:
- Parking brake
- Hazard lights
- Radio
- Interior lights
- Windshield wipers
- Adjust mirrors
- Start vehicle
Driving Maneuvers:
- 90-degree parking
- Angle parking
- Parallel parking
- Uphill & downhill parking
- U-turns
- 3-point turns
- Roundabouts
- Lane changes (both directions)
- Turns at intersections with and without traffic signals
- Navigating stop, merge, yield, and construction signs
- Appropriate speed in different zones (business, residential, school)
- Shoulder checks when changing lanes or pulling from curb
Important Reminders
- Students must always wear a safety belt — It’s the law.
- All written exams must be completed at a local Department of Public Safety (DPS) office.
