PHS Teachers Attend CITES
Math teacher Kevin Burnham, Science teacher Ashley Haug, Band teacher Eric Nix, and Computer Science/Programming teacher Chelsey Beck are at CITES today and tomorrow! CITES is the Center for the Improvement of Teacher Education & Schooling and is part of a collaborative partnership between BYU & each of the five local public school districts. These two-day sessions are held throughout the school year and are tied to readings meant to facilitate group discussion and introspection. From this, our teachers draw inspiration for improvement as they seek to implement the key principles of Civic Preparation and Engagement, Engaged Learning Through Nurturing Pedagogy, Equitable Access to Academic Knowledge and Achievement, Stewardship in School and Community, and Commitment to Renewal.
Meet the Teacher
Julie Hoffman is an English teacher at Provo High. She has taught English here for 4 years, and this year, Julie also began teaching our first AVID cohort. Prior to working at Provo High, Julie taught 8 years at IHS and also worked at Slate Canyon.
Throughout her youth, Julie had the opportunity to live in many amazing places, including Samoa, Saudi Arabia, England, and also California & Texas.
Julie’s favorite story is The Count of Monte Cristo and her favorite place to visit is Florence, Italy. And if you see her, be sure to ask her what her favorite part of a movie is!
Julie is constantly sharing and collaborating with other teachers and she is constantly engaged in student activities, assemblies, and showing faculty school spirit! She is a great friend to her colleagues, and a great teacher who has compassion for her students and desires them to grow and succeed.
We are truly grateful for Mrs. Julie Hoffman!
Youth Art Month Flag Contest
Congratulations to senior Lindy Miller who was chosen as the high school winner for the Youth Art Month Flag contest! This contest is sponsored by UAEA (Utah Art Education Association) with this year’s theme being Take a Journey through Art. Well done, Lindy!
Meet the Teacher Monday
David Kent has been a Biology teacher at Provo High since 2014. He is also department chair for the Science department. David is originally from Southeast Idaho (yes, the Napoleon Dynamite region).
Some of his faves, in his own words:
Fave Food: Hot dogs (with Ketchup and Yellow Mustard), most things with sugar
Fave Drink: Cherry Coke, but again, most soda is acceptable. Sonic’s Coke with cream coconut is delightful.
Fave Movie: Tie between Drop Dead Fred and UHF Fave TV show: Big Bang Theory with The Good Place and Bless this Mess a close #2/#3
Fave Color: Royal blue, but navy is acceptable too.
Outside of work, David enjoys watching sports, eating, being with his wife and kids, and hanging out with family. I will also note that another one of David’s favorite things to do is create hashtags! He has such a great sense of humor and is well liked by colleagues and students alike.

Community Action, in Action
Student Government visited Community Action Services today to learn the ins and outs of what happens there. After a tour and learning how donations are received and distributed, students had an opportunity to sort through several bins, separating out the vegetables, meats, beans, fruits, etc. It was a great opportunity to see the impact that the food bank has on the community & how it helps families in need get back on their feet… the most important things to remember as we get ready to kick off our annual food drive!!
