Learning Expectations
In order to earn credit, students will need to master each standard in the course. When a student does not achieve mastery, it is expected that they will work with their teacher during intervention time to achieve mastery. Important note: if a student does not attend this or any CTE course for five consecutive days without excuse, they will be dropped from the course. Course standards, sequencing, and daily learning targets are kept up-to-date and are available online at: http://provohigh.provo.edu/teacher-pages/chris-eady/
Assessment of Progress
Formative and Summative Assessments
Students, teachers, and parents can monitor student progress on PowerSchool. Student understanding of each standard in the course will be assessed through a variety of assessments, including formative quizzes and assignments, as well as summative assessments (e.g. multiple choice tests) and performance assessments. Summative assessment scores, as well as many formative assessment scores, will be reported on PowerSchool. Accommodations for students with an IEP, 504, or ELL classification will be made on an individual basis.
Success Criteria
Students will need to achieve a minimum level of mastery (at least 80%) on essential formative assessments before attempting to show mastery on most summative assessments. Most summative assessments must be passed with a minimum score of 60%. Formative and summative assessments can be attempted multiple times until the student shows mastery, other than the corresponding State CTE exam which can only be attempted once. Success criteria for various assessments are included online.
Calendar of Assessments
During a term, both formative and most summative assessments can be attempted multiple times, until students are able to show mastery of that standard. In order to earn credit for a term, all assessments for that term must be successfully passed by the last day of each term.
Grading
Student grades will be based on mastery of standards. Mastery is demonstrated by passing assessments. Assessments may include multiple choice or performance assessments. Current assessment scores can be monitored on PowerSchool, and scores are updated at least weekly. Final term grades will be an average of the student’s assessment scores for that term. There are no credit recovery options for this course. Any cheating will result in starting the course over.
Course Materials
Bring a pen or pencil (all other materials will be provided)
Classroom Procedures
Attendance
This course follows the Provo High School Attendance Policy. Students should attend class each day to keep from missing instruction and assignments. When a student is unable to attend, he/she will then be allowed to make up his/her work on his/her own time (so long as it is completed within the term). Arriving on time will be vitally important as most instruction will be given at the beginning of the period. In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, students needing special accommodations may contact me for alternative arrangements.
Assignments & Late Work
The purpose of assignments is to help students learn the concepts needed to prepare them to achieve mastery on the assessments. Most work should be completed during class time, but some homework may be necessary to complete work that wasn’t finished in class. Students should plan on about 1 hour of homework per week, but that will vary depending on the individual and the topic. The final deadline for all term work is the last day of the term. A student is expected to revise and resubmit assignments that are under 80%.
Behavior
Timeliness, attentiveness, and diligence are the keys to success in this class. This class is a computer lab. All students are required to work quietly while in the lab. Inappropriate or disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. Respect for other students, the teacher, and the computer equipment is mandatory. Appropriate student behavior also includes following Technology expectations (see below). Students are expected to remain in their assigned seat unless there is an emergency or class activities require otherwise. Students who choose not to follow classroom expectations will be reminded once. If the student continues behaving inappropriately, a parent or guardian will be notified and a log entry in the school system will be made. If the student continues behaving inappropriately after parent contact, he or she may be referred to administration. If a student’s behavior consistently demonstrates an inability to show proper respect to others, the student may be dropped from the class. A student that leaves the classroom without permission, for any period of time, will obtain an absence for that day and may receive other disciplinary action. Leaving class before the bell rings will be considered leaving class without permission. Standing by the door until the bell rings is an unacceptable practice. It is the student’s responsibility to properly inform their instructor of any special health considerations.
Technology
Students will use computers on a daily basis, accessing the internet and files through their school assigned account. We expect students to adhere to the Provo School District Acceptable Use Policy. Students who abuse technology will be reported and lose school-wide access to the devices according to policy. Vandalism of any type in this classroom will be grounds for failure of this class and possible expulsion from school. No eating or drinking will be allowed anywhere near the computers in the lab, however, students may leave food and drink on the table near the door. Students are only permitted to work in their assigned areas, save to their authorized workspace, and utilize the authorized software pertaining to the immediate assignment(s). If in doubt about what is and is not authorized, a student must ask the teacher to avoid severe consequences.
Personal electronic devices (e.g. cell phones, Gameboys) should be off and out of sight, except when used for instructional purposes at the teacher’s discretion. If students use these items inappropriately during class, they may be confiscated and given to school administration as per school policy. Parents must come to the school to retrieve confiscated electronics.
