Course: Welding/Metals

Course Description: This is a Beginning/Intermediate/Advanced course in which students will learn to operate welding and basic shop machinery. This course includes and extensive safety section where students will learn to properly operate each tool. This course also includes occupational information and laboratory experiences directly related to the welding and fabrication industry. Objectives we will follow in class come straight from the core curriculum set up by the Utah State Office of Education.
Expectations: This is a vocational elective class that prepares students for employment in the field. Punctuality and preparedness are essential to a business-like atmosphere. Disrespect toward others, equipment, or school property will not be tolerated. Horseplay of any type will not be permitted and will be dealt with appropriately. Treating others with dignity and respect is expected of all enrolled in the class. Cheating is absolutely unacceptable.
Attendance/Participation: Regular attendance is critical to learning and your ability to receive a good grade. Students are expected to attend class everyday and work diligently the entire period. The Provo High School Attendance Policy will be strictly enforced. Because of the nature of the class, most work will be completed at school. Students will have daily points allotted for participation, which includes cleanup. Not cleaning will result in complete loss of points for that day.
Class Fee: A class fee of 20.00 dollars will cover the cost of equipment needs, Gas, Metal, Safety glasses, Gloves etc. The fee is required for all students and will be due and payable to the cashier at the front office. Once paid you will receive a brand new pair of gloves and glasses for use in the shop.
Clothing: Shorts, Open face shoes and Loose/Baggy clothes are unacceptable and unsafe in class. Students must have appropriate clothing, which must cover their legs and feet for safety reasons. If students do not have appropriate clothing they will not be allowed to work in the shop, which would result in a loss of points for the day.
Cell Phones, I-Pods, Mp3 Players etc.: All electronic devices are not allowed in class. On the first offence they will be taken away. Second offence they will be taken and will only be returned to a parent or guardian. If parents need to contact students they can do so by calling the school
Safety: Safety is the number one concern in the shop, if there are any un-safe actions or dress code violations by any student during class, he or she will be removed from the shop for the duration of the day.
Safety Glasses: Safety glasses will absolutely be worn at all the times in the shop. Violators will loose daily points and may loose shop privileges.
This class is open to all students. Provo High School offers education to all students and does not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, age, color, religion, sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation and/or national origin. Furthermore, students will not discriminate through comments or conduct. Harassment of any kind will not be tolerated. Students with special needs will be accommodated in this class pending approval and instructions from the main office and/or counseling center. Violation of the any of the above is cause for expulsion from the class and the teacher reserves the right to remove any student who has violated the above. Students who have a grievance with another student or any school employee should talk to the school administration or a counselor about their concerns.
Grading Scale: Points will be earned by completing assignments, quizzes, tests, drafting journal, participation and attendance. Your grade will be a running total for the entire term. A percentage will be determined by the total points.

A 92-100% C 72-77%
A- 90-91% C- 70-71%
B+ 88-89% D 67-69%
B 82-87% D 63-66%
B- 80-81% D 60-62%
C+ 78-79% F 0-60%
