Hope Squad – Suicide Prevention
- What is Hope Squad? The Hope Squad is a group of students that provide support, encouragement, referral and resources to students who may be struggling with suicidal thoughts. It requires attendance to a monthly meeting and initial training for those students involved.
- History of Hope Squad: Provo High School is participating in its fifth year school-wide suicide prevention program. The program educates parents, students, and the community on recognizing suicidal signs and knowing what to do. The school based part of this program with students who have been nominated by their peers as someone they would turn to in a difficult situation.
- Members of Hope Squad: As a member, the student will be trained in recognizing the warning signs of suicide and how to refer the student for help. The students will not be “counselors” or “suicide intervention experts” but will learn ways to help students get help.
- Why Student Suicide Prevention? Suicide prevention is important and statistics state that suicidal students are more likely to tell a peer than an adult. Provo School District has dealt with many suicide attempts and completions. We continue realizing the importance of educating peers to recognize warning signs. Hope Squad is a peer program. The peers are trained to recognize suicidal warning signs and refer the students in need to an adult, preferably a School Counselor or Social Worker.
- The Hope Squad is overseen by PHS Counselors and Provo School District Social Workers.
